New Delhi:
The union cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to extend Government e-Marketplace (GeM)’s mandate by allowing cooperative procurement.
At this time, the registration of cooperatives as buyers was not within GeM’s existing mandate.
The move will help more than 8.54 lakh registered cooperatives and their 27 crore members as they would get products from the GeM portal at competitive rates.
These cooperatives will benefit from this decision, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told reporters.
Under the existing mandate, goods and services registered on the GeM portal are not available for use by private sector buyers. Suppliers (sellers) can come from all segments – government or private.
GeM was launched on August 9, 2016 by the Ministry of Commerce to create an open and transparent procurement platform for government buyers.
