New Delhi:
Hyundai Motor India reported total sales of 51,263 units in May on Wednesday.
The company had shipped 30,703 units in the same month last year, with massive disruptions due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Domestic sales were 42,293 units last month. In May 2021 it stood at 25,001 units.
Exports stood at 8,970 units last month, while the same in the year-ago period was 5,702 units.
The company’s two plants in Chennai observed the planned semi-annual maintenance shutdown that led to six days in the month (May 16-21) of no production, the automaker said in a statement.
This reduced vehicle availability in the month, impacting May sales figures (both domestic and export), it added.
“From June 2022, production will be increased to meet the high demand in the domestic and export markets, so that customers who have a long wait can deliver on time,” the company said.
In a separate statement, the company said it will launch the new version of its compact SUV Venue in the country later this month.
“Indian customers have shown their love and trust in Hyundai, making us the top-selling SUV brand of 2020 and 2021. At Hyundai, we will continue to excite our most beloved customers with unique and exciting products, and I am delighted to announce the launch announcing the new Hyundai VENUE in June this year,” noted Unsoo Kim, General Manager and CEO of Hyundai Motor India.
The new location will continue to delight customers both in India and in the export markets, he added.
