The proposed next generation towed gun system (TGS) is expected to be much better than its predecessor in terms of versatility and weight, while also featuring a host of improved features. The Army’s proposal outlines the procurement of 400 advanced 155mm/52 caliber guns from Indian industry players, which represents a substantial opportunity for domestic companies, as previously reported by ET. The total need for these new weapons is estimated at approximately 1,200.

Major players in the defense sector, including Larsen and Toubro, Tata Defense and Bharat Forge, are likely to vie for the contract once it gets the go-ahead from the defense ministry. Notably, the TGS will be more advanced and lighter than the advanced towed artillery gun system (ATAGS) developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), which is currently in the acquisition pipeline.
The Army has already initiated talks with Indian manufacturers, putting forward a series of suggestions for the features of the futuristic artillery weapon. This next-generation system is expected to provide superior automation, precision and an expanded range of specialized ammunition compared to existing systems in use.

Currently, the bulk of Indian artillery consists of 130mm field guns, which are gradually being upgraded to 155mm under the Sharang project. At the same time, the Army is finalizing a contract for the procurement of 155mm/52 caliber ATAGS. This order for 307 weapons will be shared between Tata Defense and Bharat Forge, who have collaborated with DRDO in developing it. The Army is currently awaiting commercial offers to advance this procurement process.
