According to data from the Ministry of Commerce, Indian seafood exports reached $7.76 billion in 2021-22, up 30 percent from $5.96 billion in exports reported in 2020-21.
India shipped 13,69,264 metric tons of seafood worth Rs 57,586.48 crore in 2021-22.
“During 2021-2022, exports improved by 31.71 percent in rupee terms, 30.26 percent in dollars, and 19.12 percent in quantity,” the Commerce Department statement said.
Frozen shrimp remained the most important export item in terms of quantity and value. Shipments were $5.82 billion last fiscal year. The segment accounts for 75.11 percent of total dollar profits.
The US is the largest market for frozen shrimp, followed by China, the European Union, Southeast Asia, Japan and the Middle East.
Frozen fish, frozen squid and frozen squid are also important export products.
