Major League Baseball Launches NFT Game With Sorare
Major League Baseball will launch an online game this summer in partnership with SoftBank-backed NFT firm Sorare, Sorare said in a statement Thursday.
The game allows baseball fans to buy and sell NFTs that represent baseball players using the cryptoccurency ether, and build fantasy teams that they can compete with to win prizes.
A non-fungible token (NFT) is a form of crypto asset that represents a digital file, such as an image, video, or piece of text.
Sports-related collectibles are proving to be a popular type of NFT as the digital asset market exploded into a multi-billion dollar industry last year.
Top sports leagues, including the US National Basketball Association, license NFT-based fan products.
Sorare, which raised $680 million in a funding round led by SoftBank last year, also has a partnership with Major League Soccer in the United States.
The company is currently under investigation by the British gambling watchdog.
