Parameswaran Iyer, a retired bureaucrat, has been appointed as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of the government think tank NITI Aayog.
He replaces Amitabh Kant and becomes the third CEO of NITI Aayog. Sindhushree Khullar was the agency’s first CEO, created in January 2015 to replace the Planning Commission.
Mr. Kant was appointed CEO of the think tank in 2016 and his term of office ends on June 30, 2022.
Mr Iyer’s term of office will begin upon the completion of Mr Kant’s term on June 30, 2022, a government notice said.
Mr Iyer is a 1981 IAS officer of the cadre of Uttar Pradesh.
“The Cabinet Appointments Committee has approved the appointment of Shri Parameswaran Iyer, lAS (UP:81), retired as Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog Vice Shri Amitabh Kant upon completion of his term of office on 30.06.2022, for a term of two years or to further injunctions, whichever is earlier, on the same terms as those applied to Shri Amitabh Kant,” the notice read.
Mr. Kant was appointed CEO of NITI Aayog on February 17, 2016 for a fixed term of two years. He was later given an extension until June 30, 2019. His term was extended for another two years, until June 2021. However, last year he was given a third extension until June 30, 2022.
