Goal On Friday said that the diversity, stock and inclusion programs rotate – including some who want his staff and merchandise to be reflected.
In a memo that was sent to his employees, the retailer established in Minneapolis said that it will end his three-year-old Dei objectives, reports at external diversity-oriented groups such as the Corporate Equality Index of the Human Rights Campaign and a program ended in wearing more Products from black or minority companies.
The memo was sent to the staff on Friday and viewed by CNBC. It is written by Kiera Fernandez, Chief Community Impact and Equity Officer for Target.
“Many years of data, insights, listening and learning have designed this following chapter in our strategy,” she said in the memo. “And as a retailer who serves millions of consumers every day, we understand the importance of over time and in the future, all in the service of stimulating the growth of the target and cooperation.”
With the relocation, the Discounter, based in Minneapolis, participates in a growing list of companies, including TractorFacebook's older Meta” Walmart And McDonald's that have dropped dei-related commitments and goals. Some of those companies were confronted with pressure from conservative activists or quoted the prevailing blocking action of the Supreme Court at colleges – those who may not force companies to take any action.
The company's decision also follows the executive orders of President Donald Trump, almost immediately after his inauguration, to end the Dei programs of the government and to supervise federal officials on those initiatives on leave.
The diversity obligations of many companies, including Target's, go years ago and were reinforced in the aftermath of the “Black Lives Matter” protests and the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
Four years ago, Target CEO Brian Cornell said that the murder – which took place just a short distance from the Target head office in his hometown – felt personally. He said it motivated him to increase the diversity and stock efforts of Target.
“That could have been one of my intended team members,” he said at the time, told his thoughts as he saw the video of Floyd who made his last breaths.
