The telecommunications department met with operators today to discuss the increasing number of call interruptions and quality of service related issues, while discussing policies that could be considered to improve call quality.
The meeting, which is taking place as the country rolls out massive 5G networks, was chaired by Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman and attended by telecom service providers including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea.
The discussion focused on identifying policy and operational measures that could help telcos improve the quality of telecom services in the country, according to DoT sources. Discussions ranged from the issue of interference caused by illegal boosters to resolving some remaining Right of Way issues. During the meeting, which lasted nearly two hours, telcos also gave detailed presentations on the current level of service quality and benchmarks, the sources said.
While telecom regulator Trai looks at service quality standards, the DOT’s discussion with telecom operators has been more about identifying problem areas and seeking input for policies and operational interventions that can facilitate better service quality in the country.
In September this year, Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw indicated that the quality parameters for telecom services could be made stricter and tighter, possibly to the extent of 3-4 times. The minister had made it abundantly clear that the industry will have to “significantly” improve the quality of the telecom service as the government has also done its part by ushering in major reforms in the sector
