THANE: A delegation of experts, including representatives of the World Bank (WB), visited Thane on Wednesday as part of the state government’s ambitious proposal to revamp its statistics collection system, officials said.
Officials said the state wants real-time data from all districts at the click of a button. Currently, the state relies on outdated data that is collected and reported to the state months later, or in some cases even a year later.
Obtaining timely and updated data from across the district will help decision makers Mantralaya to provide timely solutions or corrective measures on various issues of departments like health, education, public works like roads and connectivity modes, among others, officials said.
Accordingly, a proposal was made to the World Bank and experts to upgrade the statistical resource network and design a relevant program in collaboration with the Directorate of Economics and Statistics of MITRAofficials said.
A delegation of experts including Thomas Danielwitz, World Bank Senior Economist, Prof. Paul Chung, National Statistics, Singapore and Shreya Dutta-Mishra, WB, made a trial visit to Thane in Konkan Division for the program and met Thane Collector Ashok Shingare to understand the system that Thane followed in collecting and passing on the information to the state government.
“The project will help map the real-time condition of facilities in each of the districts, which in turn will also help the government reorganize its budgetary allocations accordingly. Officials said the initiative will bridge the gap between the current ground situation and the solutions provided by the government,” said Vaibhav Kulkarni, district planning officer, Thane collectorate.
The program is currently in its initial stages and a final design will be outlined after the team visits all the districts in the state and prepares and submits its observations to the state government.
“The teams will analyze the situation in the districts and propose corrective measures. If implemented, it will be done with financing from the World Bank,” Kulkarni added.
