Afghanistan sealed a streak of whitewash against the Netherlands in the third one-day international in Doha on Tuesday, boosting their qualifying bid for the 2023 World Cup. Najibullah Zadran hit a 59-ball 71 when the Afghans scored 254-5 from their 50 overs, before their spinners caused a Dutch collapse from 103-0 to 179 all-out. The 75-run win was Afghanistan’s sixth win out of as many matches and takes them to fifth in the 2023 World Cup Super League table with 13 teams.
The top eight countries will automatically qualify for next year’s global showpiece in India.
Afghanistan have played in each of the last two ODI World Cups.
Hashmatullah Shahidi’s men, the lead batter for the third consecutive game in the series, got off to a solid start, with Riaz Hussan and Rahmat Shah scoring 50 and 48 respectively.
Najibullah provided the impetus for a challenging total with eight fours and three sixes in his innings.
The Netherlands got off to a brilliant start to their chase with an opening score of 103 points between Scott Edwards and Colin Ackermann.
But leg spinner Qais Ahmad, who was making his ODI debut, caught Tonga-born wicketkeeper Edwards lbw for 54 to start a procession of wickets.
Rashid Khan fired Ackermann for 81 years and the Netherlands offered little other resistance.
21-year-old Qais, who has starred in T20 franchises around the world, took the last two wickets to finish with figures of 3-32.
Afghanistan 254-5 from 50 overs (Najibullah 71, Hussan 50) v Netherlands 179 all out from 42.4 overs (Ackermann 81, Edwards 54; Qais 3-32)
Result: Afghanistan wins by 75 runs
