England Test skipper Joe Root said on Sunday he believes he is the right man to lead the Three Lions in the game’s longest format. Root’s comments came after England suffered a 146-point loss to Australia in the fifth Test. The Three Lions lost to the Ashes 0-4. “I would love to have the opportunity to bring this team forward and turn things around. Right now as a group of players we are going through a very difficult phase and the performance was not good enough. But I would like the opportunity to turn things around and for us to find the performance you would expect from an English test team, which we’ve been missing lately,” ESPNcricinfo was quoted as saying by Root.
“I believe I am the right man to bring this team forward, in my own eyes. If that decision is taken out of my hands then so be it, but I would love the opportunity to take that further. And yes, I do feel like going ahead and turning things around, but we’ll see how things unfold,” he added.
England were 68/0, chasing 271, but then England lost all ten wickets for 56 runs, and eventually the visitors were knocked out for 124, giving Australia a 146-run victory in the fifth Ashes Test.
“It was a really bad showing today with the bat. We felt we had a real chance of winning this test match but there were some very bad layoffs after a promising start so it’s disappointing to be sitting here like that heavily beaten like that,” Root said.
“The quality is there…the potential is definitely there. There’s a lot of talent, we just haven’t made any performances out of it, which is the bottom line in Test cricket. You have to put performance at this level, and we’re there during this one trip failed at all as a batting group,” he added.
Cameron Green and Scott Boland each took three wickets in the second innings as Australia defeated England by 146 runs in the fifth Ashes Test here at the Blundstone Arena on Sunday.
