Australian opener David Warner thinks Cameron Green will face a “big call” regarding his participation in the IPL, warning the jack-of-all-trades of possible burnout ahead of a grueling schedule. Green, who has already registered for the IPL auctions, is likely to spend nearly half of the season in India for the T20 competition, alongside four Tests and two ODI series. He also has tours of England and South Africa planned for next year’s ODI World Cup in India.
“Nineteen consecutive weeks in India, as it’s also your first trip there, can be quite challenging – from a heat, game, recovery point of view,” Warner told the West Indies ahead of Australia’s test series on Monday.
“I’ve been through it, I’ve done the Test series and the IPL. It’s tough. Based on that you have five Test matches in England. Then I think you have 20 days off before you go to South Africa and then to a World Cup.
“Glenn Maxwell did it a few years ago, played all year and then came the (Australian) season.
“From a youngster’s point of view, it’s totally up to him, it’s his decision to make. For the longevity of him and his career, it’s a big decision for him as a youngster. Whatever decision he makes, we’ll respect it as players.” But in the end it’s up to him and CA.”
Green said he is aware things are going to be tough but believes he has the right support system in place to get through the rigors of the hectic schedule.
“It’s going to be a really tough year. I don’t think anyone would disagree. But it’s a really good opportunity, I think. If you play all three formats and IPL, you’re going to learn a lot about your cricket.
“You may be pushed a little bit with your body. I support that because I have good resources and around me to get through that. And do everything you can to take care of your body and have peace in it. It will be a tough year.”
