The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has issued a notice to the Delhi Police requesting registration of FIR against those who trolled, assaulted, threatened to rape and assault the sister of cricketer Shubman Gill, officials said on Wednesday. Gill’s ton in Gujarat Titan’s final match in the IPL competition stage knocked out Royal Challengers Bangalore from the tournament. After the match, Gill and his sister were subjected to trolling and abuse from some on various social media platforms.
The DCW notice said: “These posts on the social media platform ‘Twitter’ and ‘Instagram’ are obscene, misogynistic, threatening and extremely offensive towards Shubman Gill’s sister. She is also being threatened with rape and assault on social media, which is a downright criminal act.” This is a very serious matter and requires urgent action, it added.
DCW chief Swati Maliwal took to Twitter and shared the report, asking the police to submit a detailed action report by May 26.
“Learning suo-moto about the online trolling and abuse of the sister of cricketer #ShubmanGill, we have sent a message to the Delhi Police to request registration of FIR. The police will file a detailed action report by May 26. Such criminals will not be allowed to get away with this,” she tweeted.
Through its message, the DCW sought a copy of the FIR registered in the case, identified details of the accused and arrested them. In the event that there were no arrests, the women’s rights body has requested details of the steps taken by the police to make the arrests.
