The Indian cricket team got off to a losing start on the Bangladesh tour, losing its first ODI by a slim margin of 1 wicket. India looked set for victory despite an under-par score of 186 runs on the board, but wicketkeeper KL Rahul dropped the all-important catch of Mehidy Hasan Miraz before Washington Sundar appeared to have refused to even approach a catch. opportunity. Veteran Indian wicket-keeper batsman, Dinesh Karthik, was stunned by the duo’s fielding errors.
In a chat on Cricbuzz as an expert, Karthik admitted that he couldn’t understand why Sundar didn’t come in to catch the ball.
“Obviously KL Rahul’s fall towards the end and Sundar isn’t coming, I don’t know why he didn’t come in. I don’t know if it was because of the lights which I wouldn’t know but if he had seen it he would have have to go for it. That’s the only question he can answer. The overall fielding effort was 50-50. Not the best day, but not the worst day either. I think in the end, with the pressure, we left some boundaries too,” said Karthik.
The incident had enraged Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who even lost his cool on the pitch as he saw Miraz’s catch beg not once but twice in the last few overs.
KL Rahul admitted in the post match press conference that India had lost two catching chances at the end.
“That’s right with cricket. You have to expect the unexpected. As long as cricket is played things like this keep happening. They fought really well to the end and the few dropped catches and that innings from Mehidy,” he said.
The Indian team would try to put things right when they meet Bangladesh again in the 2nd ODI on Wednesday.
