Former cricketer Parthiv Patel on Tuesday said Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah had received full support from Rohit Sharma as they struggled in the early part of their IPL stint with Mumbai Indians. Comparing Rohit's leadership to CSK talisman MS Dhoni, Parthiv said the Mumbai cricketer never “made a blunder” while the Chennai captain had made a few mistakes during his long IPL stint.
“I think the most important thing is that he (Rohit) supports his players. The best examples of this are Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah joined MI in 2014 and in 2015 his performances were not great.” Parthiv told Jio Cinema this on Tuesday.
“They even thought of sending him back after half the season. But Rohit Sharma believed in his ability and from 2016 onwards his performances have been excellent,” added the former India wicketkeeper, who played 25 Tests.
Bumrah, who joined MI in 2014, has emerged as the country's go-to pacer in all three formats and played a crucial role in Mumbai's success in the IPL.
Pandya, after being part of the five-time champions in 2015, led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and is now back as MI skipper, replacing Rohit.
“Same goes for Hardik Pandya. He came in 2015 and became popular. His 2016 season wasn't great but MI stuck with him and Pandya became the player he is today.” He added that Rohit brings a sense of calm to the team that is second to none.
“The best example is the two IPLs that MI won by just one run each. That wouldn't have been possible if you didn't have a captain who could stay calm on the ground.
“When there is a close match, sometimes wrong decisions are made or blunders are made. But the hallmark of Rohit Sharma's captaincy is that you cannot remember him making a blunder in the last 10 years.
“Even Dhoni has committed blunders like giving Pawan Negi a chance, but when you see Rohit, you will never see a blunder. Keeping the process simple is something Dhoni advises, but we see Rohit practicing that in games,” Parthiv added .
Former India pacer Zaheer Khan said Rohit makes decisions based on circumstances, which is one of the toughest tasks for a captain in IPL.
“You can plan a match in advance, but no one knows how the proceedings will unfold halfway through. He (Rohit) acts based on situations and makes decisions, and often they are different from what is planned in the run-up to the match. the game.
“I think that is his strength. In the IPL, making on-the-spot decisions is one of the biggest challenges for captains and he has done that well for MI,” he added.
