It is not uncommon for cricket matches between India and Bangladesh to spark controversy. After the two sides faced each other in the T20 World Cup 2022 Group 2 match on Wednesday, Bangladesh wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan accused India’s Virat Kohli of ‘fake fielding’. The accusation sparked a huge debate on social media, with fans of both teams advocating their case. Even veteran cricket expert Harsha Bhogle has expressed his views on the subject, suggesting Bangladesh fans not to ‘look for excuses’ after their defeat.
Hasan, who spoke to the media in the mixed zone after the game against India, cited the episode of ‘fake fielding’ as one of the reasons for his team’s defeat. A number of fans have since taken to social media to highlight the incident, suggesting that Bangladesh should have been awarded 5 runs due to Kohli’s actions.
Bhogle, who had witnessed the intensification of the controversy, explained that in order to give India a 5-point penalty, the umpires need to notice, evaluate and then decide whether the bowling match should be reprimanded.

“As for the fake field incident, the truth is that no one saw it. Not the umpires, not the batters and neither do we. Law 41.5 does provide for the sanctions for fake field work (the umpire still has to interpret it) but no one saw it So what do you do!

“I don’t think anyone can complain that the ground is wet. Shakib was right when he said it should favor the batting side. The umpires and trustees should keep the game going until it’s not possible to do this. well, so that minimal time was lost.
“So, to my friends in Bangladesh, please don’t look at fake field work or wet conditions as a reason not to hit the target. If one of the batters had stayed to the end, Bangladesh could have won. We are all guilty if we looking for excuses, we don’t grow,” Harsha said in a series of tweets.

Bangladesh started very well as it chased the 185-run goal, but lost steam after rain interrupted play and the goal was adjusted to 151 in 16 overs. Litton Das gave his team a strong start, scoring 60 out of 27. Nurul Hasan took the game over to last, scoring 25 out of 14, but his efforts were not enough to get the team across the line.
