Lead-off hitter Shubman Gill, who was instrumental in India’s 168-run victory over New Zealand to clinch the three-game T20I series with his first ton, said on Wednesday he did nothing extra during his big hit. Gill didn’t hold out on 126 to help India post a massive 234 for 4 after opting to bat. India then bowled out New Zealand for a meager 66 in 12.1 overs to record their biggest win in terms of runs.
“It feels good when you practice and it pays off. Happy to get the big ones for the team. Everyone has a different technique to hit sixes,” said Gill during the post-match presentation.
“Hardik Bhai said that I should hit the way I do, and there is no need to do anything extra. When you represent your country, I don’t think there is any kind of fatigue, and I am happy to see all three formats.” .”
Captain Hardik Pandya said he normally uses his gut feeling when making decisions on the pitch.
“I’ve always played the game like this, trying to understand the situation and understand what is needed at the time, and not having preconceived notions. I often stand by my guts,” said Pandya, who was named player-of – the serials.
“I have a very simple rule about my life and captaincy: If I go down, I go down with my decisions. When I played the IPL final, I felt the second innings were more punchy. We want to normalize these pressure games, and hopefully we can do better on bigger stages.”
A disappointed New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner credited India for playing “excellent” cricket.
“Some of their lads are in a great nick at the moment. It’s hard to win when you lose five wickets in the power play. It can be challenging when the ball swings.
“If you look at the way India played, they took their time in the beginning and when it got flat they really tried to get us,” said Santner.
Asked about the ODI World Cup in India later this year, Santner said: “I think there will be some dew at that time of year, most teams will bowl first.
“We’ve seen some great wickets, if it’s like this in October it’s going to be a great World Cup to be a part of and learn from. I think 320 would be the score we’d like to limit teams to then.”
