Former India pacer RP Singh has commented on the decision to equip captain Rohit Sharma for the upcoming T20I five-match series against South Africa. Rohit had a subpar Indian Premier League season with the bat, while Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the IPL points list. He finished the season with 268 runs from 14 games, not even scoring 50. RP Singh feels there was no reason for Rohit to take a break from the South African series.
“I think he should have played the series. Rest or not is his personal thought. It depends on how much fatigue he experiences. But I don’t think there was a need for a break. He should have played. It’s a long series and don’t forget that he is also the captain,” said RP Singh during an interaction on India TV.
Speaking further about Rohit’s poor form, RP Singh stressed that the 35-year-old has not been consistent in the IPL over the past three to four seasons.
“In the IPL, Rohit has not scored more than 400 runs in recent seasons. There are many others who have crossed the 400-run mark. His performance has been inconsistent throughout the tournament, but he came up with some ‘match-winning blows. So everyone felt the spark in his batting was there. In the shortest format you need match winners. Even if they shoot in a few games, the team will win it,” he added.
In the absence of Rohit, KL Rahul will lead Team India against South Africa.
The first T20I will be played on Thursday 9 June at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
