Hardik Pandya-led Team India got off to a winning start in the two-match T20I series against Ireland as the squad outclassed the hosts by seven wickets in Sunday’s first T20I. India chased 109 in 12 overs and drove home with seven wickets in hand and 16 balls left as Deepak Hooda played an unbeaten knock of 47. then designated opener Ruturaj Gaikwad.
During a virtual press conference after the race, skipper Hardik explained why Ruturaj did not come out to open.
“Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad) had a problem in his calf. We had a chance to take a risk and send him in to open, but I didn’t think it was right. A player’s well-being is more important, and i thought we will be able to manage what happens in the match after that it was pretty easy there was not much to decide no matter what our batting order we all moved up one spot and it wasnt a headache We wanted to make sure we weren’t taking any risks with Rutu,” Hardik said during the press conference.
Of debutant Umran Malik, Hardik said: “When you play for India for the first time and the journey he has been on, it is important to give time to such a bowler and such a talent. Whether it be a good day or a bad day was not relevant. For him, playing alone for India is a very big thing, and that’s something I’m very happy about, no matter how the result went, good or bad, it’s okay.”
“It’s an essential part of the game, but at the same time he will only get better from now on, the more matches he plays, and it’s important for him to play for India, for everyone to play for India. I want him to enjoy this moment because it doesn’t happen every time. A debut only happens once,” he added.

It was Ireland’s Harry Tector who stood out with the bat for the hosts, as he struck out a 64-run knockout from just 33 balls, and it was he who helped Ireland to 108 in 12 overs.
“He played some great shots, and he’s clearly 22, I batted him too, so maybe he can score some more sixes and maybe get an IPL contract, and I wish him the best of luck. Take care of him, give him the right guidance it’s not all about cricket it’s about understanding your whole lifestyle and what’s at stake if you can pull that off I’m sure he’ll be there – not just in IPL , in all competitions in the world,” said Hardik.
