South Africa had raided India in the first T20I on Thursday as the Proteas chased 212 at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium to take a 1-0 lead in the run of five games. Both teams would now face it on Sunday in the second T20I and in a press conference on Saturday, pacer Wayne Parnell talked about the mood in the camp and how people had written South Africa off 10 overs in their chase in the first game.
“I think in India the tosses are generally important. But having said that, you have to bat well, bowl well. The other night in Delhi was an incredible chase. From 10 overs most people thought we were out of the but we managed to stay in it and take it deep. We had two guys who played great innings and tomorrow will be the same, it will be difficult for us bowlers,” Parnell said at a news conference.
“Yes, I think this game (2nd T20I) will of course be crucial. India will definitely bounce back. They are a quality side; we expect nothing less. I think every game until Bengaluru will be difficult.” It was a great win last night and we can take a lot of confidence from that. But it’s a brand new venue, new conditions, so we have to adapt and get off to a good start,” he added.
Aiden Markram had tested positive for COVID-19 prior to the first T20I. When asked about an update on the star batter, Parnell said: “I’m not sure when he (Aiden Markram) will be available. He seems fine. I think the doctors are more qualified to give you information on that.”
Speaking of the pitch and how important it is to keep the boys fresh, Parnell said: “I think most wickets here prefer to score runs. But hey, it’s all about what we get on that particular day. You know, it’s been swinging around a bit and maybe we can use that to our advantage.”
“Today was optional training. Most of the guys have played in the IPL so trying to get them fresh and ready for the games. It’s been a 10-12 week IPL, lots of time in the bubble. Getting guys mentally fresh will be very important to us,” he added.
India and South Africa will face each other on Sunday in the second T20I at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
