Lucknow Super Giants defeated Chennai Super Kings by six wickets while chasing 211 in an IPL 2022 match at Brabourne Stadium on Thursday. During the game, CSK saw wicketkeeper batter MS Dhoni change the fielding positions with the cameras on him, while newly appointed skipper Ravindra Jadeja was fielding in the outfield. Dhoni relinquished his captaincy before the start of this season, a move seen as an attempt by the legendary captain to prime Jadeja as a future leader.
But his decision to rule the field against Lucknow in what was CSK’s second game of the season has displeased cricket experts. Former batter Ajay Jadeja of India criticized Dhoni taking the lead against Super Giants, saying it would have eroded Ravindra Jadeja’s confidence.
“Whatever I saw was wrong. There is no doubt about it. There is no bigger fan of MS Dhoni than I am. I am his fan because of the temperament and the things he does. If this was the last game you depended on of qualifying, then I would still have understood. In those situations, sometimes you take back the reins because there is a need for it. But in the second game, we got to see this, and I’m not just saying because it’s Ravindra Jadeja,” Jadeja told Cricbuzz†
“MS Dhoni is a big name, I don’t like to say things like that, but we’re talking about the game here, so I have no doubt that what I saw today I didn’t like,” he continued.
Jadeja said it was Dhoni’s decision to give up the CSK captaincy and that is all the more reason to give Ravindra Jadeja the freedom to learn.
“I have a feeling there has never been a greater captain than MS Dhoni and there never will be. If it is your decision (to step down) and you want someone else (as captain), let someone go forward , you have the person backwards,” said Ajay Jadeja.
“That person (Jadeja)’s confidence took a big dent. He wasn’t there in the play itself, not in the beginning and not in the end,” he added.
Defending champions Chennai Super Kings have lost both matches so far and will face the lavish Punjab Kings on Sunday.
In the penultimate over of the match, CSK decided to hand over the ball to Shivam Dube. The medium pacer eventually gave up 25 runs and LSG batters Evin Lewis and Ayush Badoni took their toll.
This is the first time in their history that CSK has lost their first two matches in the IPL. The Ravindra Jadeja-led side will face Punjab Kings at Brabourne Stadium next Sunday.
