Former Indian cricketer Akash Chopra believes Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling action makes him more prone to injury compared to other fast bowlers. While admitting that bowling in itself is not a natural process, Chopra said Bumrah’s career will revolve around injuries caused by his unorthodox bowling action. It is worth noting that Bumrah has been left out of India’s 15-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup due to injury. The Asian Cup is scheduled between August 27 and September 11.
“We don’t know the nature of his injury. Yes, there is a problem… He doesn’t play regularly,” Chopra said while answering a question on his YouTube channel.
“But another thing to consider is that his bowling action is very unusual. Getting pressure on his ligaments in different places in the body is not very natural. Bowling in itself is not very natural. It puts a lot of strain (on the body) and gives rise to injuries. His (Bumrah’s) action is very unorthodox and puts the biomechanics to the test a bit. In such a case, the risk of injury is greater,” said the former India player.
“Maybe it’s not about the workload, it’s about who Bumrah is. So injuries will be with him,” he added.
Bumrah has long been the spearhead of India, but injuries have often sidelined him. Chopra believes that the team management and the player must find a solution.
“Jasprit Bumrah is a national asset. He remains number one in all formats. But if he is injured there will be problems,” said Chopra.
