Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season opener at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. The match will kick off a two-month cricket carnival that fans have been eagerly awaiting. It will also be a rematch of last year’s final where CSK defeated KKR in the final.
In IPL 2022, CSK will be under a new captain, with Ravindra Jadeja taking over from MS Dhoni on Thursday. The defending champion will have to do without some of last season’s star players, under the guise of Faf du Plessis, Shardul Thakur and Josh Hazlewood. Meanwhile, the side will also have some new faces with Devon Conway and Adam Milne joining the ranks.
The franchise will rely heavily on Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhoni, Jadeja and Ambati Rayudu in the upcoming game. Star all-rounder Moeen Ali will miss the opener vs KKR.
KKR also has a new captain with Shreyas Iyer replacing Eoin Morgan as skipper. KKR bought Iyer for a huge sum of Rs 12.25 crore in this year’s mega auction. Even KKR will be without some key players, with the likes of Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi and Lockie Ferguson no longer part of the squad.
Players like Nitish Rana, Venkatesh Iyer and Sunil Narine will be crucial to KKR’s ambitions this season.
Both sides faced each other a total of 28 times, with CSK coming out on top with 18 wins. KKR has won nine times and one match ended as an unsuccessful meeting.
Last season, the two sides faced each other three times and CSK came out on top on all occasions, including the 2021 IPL final.
CSK defeated KKR by 27 runs in the final.
The IPL 2022 season opener kicks off at 7:30pm IST with both teams on the hunt for glory.
