The Indian cricket team’s Super 12 match against Bangladesh spawned some highly contentious incidents. Although India won the match in the last over, the swift resumption of play after rain and the allegations of ‘fake fielding’ on Virat Kohli have attracted much attention from fans, former cricketers and pundits. While Bangladesh continues to criticize umpires in the match, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has admitted Kohli was guilty of ‘fake fielding’ and India was given a reprieve for failing to notice the incident.
It was Bangladesh wicketkeeper batter Nurul Hasan who came out with all the guns against Virat Kohli and the Indian team, suggesting his side should have had 5 more runs due to the Indian star’s action.
Even Aakash Chopra thinks Kohli’s action would have given India a penalty had the umpires seen what he was doing on the pitch.
“Woh fake fielding tha, 100% tha, wo jo throw marne ka prayas kia wo agar umpire dekhte toh 5 run ki pentaly padti humko aur 5 run se hum match bhi jeete. (Yes, that was 100% fake fielding because of the way Kohli if the umpires had seen him do that we would have been given a five run penalty and we would have won by just five runs.) So we escaped here but next time someone does this the umpires will have to be more careful Are Bangladesh right? Yes, but nobody noticed then, so there’s nothing they can do now,” said the cricketer turned expert in a video on his YouTube channel.

Not just the 5-run penalty, Chopra also stressed that the ball would have been called ‘dead’, while the 2 runs Bangladesh ran on that ball would also have been counted.

“Had those five penalty runs been given, the two the Bangladesh pair ran would still have been counted, the ball would have been dead and Bangladesh would have been allowed to choose who attacks the next ball,” Chopra revealed in the video.
The former India opener does feel that India has benefited from the referee’s failure in the match. But he also claimed the need to be more careful about such cases in the future.
