KL Rahul likely to be dropped as LSG captain©BCCI/Sportzpics
Star wicketkeeper KL Rahul is expected to be retained by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, but not as captain. IANS understands that captaincy pressure is the main reason behind Rahul stepping down from the role as he wants to contribute more with the bat. However, it remains uncertain who will lead the team in the upcoming edition of IPL 2025. Sources close to the Lucknow franchise have confirmed that Rahul will be retained, but the captaincy role remains uncertain with Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran being the two big names in the race.
“The meeting was formally held with CEO Sanjiv Goenka on Monday, the topics of captaincy and retention were discussed. However, Rahul is unlikely to lead the side in the upcoming edition as he wants to explore himself more as a batsman. Goenka has full faith in Rahul and he will be retained as a player but will not be seen as the captain of the side,” sources close to the franchise in Lucknow told IANS.
“We are still exploring the captaincy option but now that the BCCI has agreed to the terms for retaining players, we have two players (Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Poran) in the race,” he added.
On Monday Rahul met Goenka at his office in Alipore, Kolkata to discuss business. Both had a long chat for about four hours after which Rahul left for Bengaluru, National Cricket Academy to start his Duleep Trophy training.
Rahul will be playing for Team 'A' led by Shubman Gill.
Rahul had a falling out with LSG owner Goenka in full view of the fans. Sources say that the LSG owner was not happy with Rahul's captaincy as Lucknow Super Giants failed to qualify for the play-offs, despite being in a good position. After the IPL, Rahul did not perform well and was left out of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup that India won in Barbados. He is hoping to make it to the Indian T20 team.
