Rohit Sharma, captain of Team India, expressed his frustration over the injuries suffered by front-line players, especially when the team will compete in the Asia Cup and World Cup later this year. With Jasprit Bumrah, the main pacer, out with a long-term injury, India had a tough match in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC), losing to Australia last month. India will take on the West Indies in a two-match test series, which begins in Dominica later on Wednesday.
Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack in the absence of the injured Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who is rested due to workload management.
For the tour, India has included unrestricted pacer Mukesh Kumar in the squad, while Navdeep Saini has been recalled to the side. Jaydev Unadkat, who ended a 12-year hiatus last year for a Test recall against Bangladesh, is also part of the squad.
On the eve of the start of the first test, Rohit said the team has no choice but to manage the available resources by rotating them.
“Fast bowlers have taken a lot of wickets here (in the West Indies). People get injured and unfortunately we have to rotate players. Hamare passes fast bowlers ki line nahi lagi hui hain (we don’t have a row of fast bowlers),” Rohit said at a press conference .
However, Rohit believes that domestic stars Unadkat and Mukesh can do the job for the team if there are no injured pros.
“There are a lot of Indian fast bowlers who are injured, so we have to deal with the bowlers we have. Our experienced bowlers couldn’t come on this tour. Jaydev is not new. He has been playing for 10-12 years. Mukesh Kumar is a consistent performer in domestic cricket,” he added.
