Two of the best batsmen in Indian cricket history, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, have worked wonders with the bat in the Indian team. In the ODI series against Australia, Rohit and Kohli have not had the best performances as they have not scored many points on the board. However, they get a chance to reach a historic milestone in the third ODI against the Aussies. As a pair, Rohit-Kohli remain just two runs away from completing 5000 runs in international cricket’s 50-over format.
At present, Rohit and Kohli have combined for 4998 runs in ODI cricket. If they add two more runs to the Chennai encounter, they will break a ‘world record’ by becoming the fastest pair in the history of the game to score 5000 runs in the 50-over format.
The Indian pair need a total of 85 innings to collect 4998 runs in ODIs to date, averaging 62.47. On their way to the figure, they scored a total of 18 centuries and 15 half-centuries cumulatively.
The record for the fastest 5000 runs in ODI cricket as a pair is currently held by Gordon Greenidge of the West Indies and Desmond Haynes, who had reached the milestone in 97 innings.
Following them in the list are Matthew Hayden-Adam Gilchrist (104) from Australia and Tillakaratne Dilshan-Kumar Sangakkara (105) from Sri Lanka.
When it comes to pairs with over 4000 runs in ODIs, Kohli-Rohit is the only pair to average over 60.
When it comes to overall tally, Kohli-Rohit ranks 8th in terms of pairs having the most runs in ODI cricket. The iconic duo of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly lead the list with a whopping 8227 runs to their credit as a pair.
