Going into Tuesday’s ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 match between South Africa and the Netherlands, you would hardly have believed that the heavyweights Proteas were in for a shock. But the Scott Edwards-led Netherlands believed in itself. Ultimately, they recorded one of the best wins in ODI World Cup history by beating world number 3 South Africa. Netherlands, the world’s No. 14 ODI team, played like a top side to stun South Africa, who were one of the best sides in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
Batting first, in a 43-over-a-side match due to rain delay, Netherlands posted a good total of 245/8, with skipper Scott Edwards scoring a fantastic 69-ball 78*. In response, South Africa’s chase never really lasted as they were all out for 207 in 452.5 overs. It is the third World Cup victory ever for the Netherlands and the first since 2007.
“Wow! What an effort from the Dutch. The way they are going about their work is so positive. Scott Edwards was sensational in the last 10 overs with the bat and after that the Dutch bowlers did the job in style. #NEDvsSA, Virender Sehwag praised the efforts of the Netherlands.

The Netherlands caused the second major setback of this World Cup on Tuesday when it defeated the desired South Africa by 38 runs in Dharamsala. A three-wicket haul from Logan van Beek, a half-century from skipper Scott Edwards and an all-round show from Roelof van der Merwe helped the Netherlands beat South Africa, two days after Afghanistan caused an upset by beating England.

South Africa is now in third place with two wins and one defeat and four points. The Netherlands is ninth with a win and two defeats.
Chasing 246 runs in 43 overs, the Proteas started reasonably well, with Quinton de Kock and skipper Temba Bavuma scoring some big hits. However, Colin Ackermann ended the duo’s partnership with 36 runs, dismissing De Kock for 20 runs when he was caught by Scott Edwards. South Africa were 36/1 in eight overs.
In the next two overs, the game turned in Holland’s favor as they lost skipper Bavuma (16) after he was cleared by Roelef van der Merwe. Paul van Meekeren cleared Aiden Markram for just one. Merwe also dismissed Rassie van der Dussen for four runs in his next over after being caught by Aryan Dutt. South Africa were 44/4 in 11.2 overs.
Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, the backbone of Protea’s middle order, started to rebuild the innings and the side reached the 50-run mark in 12.5 overs.
Klaasen-Miller was closing in on a fifty-run partnership when Klaasen was removed by Logan van Beek for 28. He was caught at fine leg by Vikramjit Singh. Proteas were 89/5 in 18.5 overs.
Miller with Marco Jansen took Proteas past the 100-run mark in 22.2 overs.
Meekeran dealt another blow to Proteas by rattling Jansen’s stumps when he was nine. Proteas were now 109/6 in 25 overs.
Miller and Gerald Coetzee continued the innings and reduced the deficit to just over 100 runs.
Just when Miller looked menacing and van Beek clean-bowled him for 43 runs. Coetzee didn’t last much longer and was banned for 22 years after being caught by Scott Edwards. Bas de Leede got the wicket. The Proteas were 147/8 in 33.1 overs.
