The failure of Charlie Dean by Deepti Sharma at the end of the non-rush hour in the third and final ODI at the Lord’s Cricket Ground on Saturday has sparked polarizing opinions. In the 44th over, Deepti ran away from Dean for backing too far before letting the ball go out of control, and India went on to win the game by 16 runs. This manner of dismissal has always led to conflicting opinions and it is no surprise that some England cricketers were in the mood to accept this wicket.
England wicketkeeper batter Sam Billings took to Twitter to say: “Surely there is no person who has played the game who thinks this is acceptable? Just not cricket.”
However, it was Alex Hales’ response that has now gone viral, as he appeared to have justified this manner of dismissal by saying that it is not difficult for the batters to leave their crease until the ball is released.
“It shouldn’t be difficult for the non-striker to stay in their fold until the ball has left the hand,” he tweeted.
The English pacesetter James Anderson was outraged by this manner of dismissal and he expressed his displeasure on Twitter. He wrote: “Will never understand why players feel the need to do this. Steal them ground.”

It is important to note that the ICC announced certain changes to the terms of play earlier this month.
With regard to “running out of the non-striker”, the ICC stated: “The terms of play follow the laws in moving this method of effecting a run-out from the ‘Unfair play’ section to the ‘Run out’ section ‘.”
Dean, who was England’s last wicket to fall, was devastated and walked away in tears after shaking hands with the Indian players.

She had walked in with the score at 65/7 with England chasing 170, setting up a 38-run tie with skipper Amy Jones. Even after Jones was fired, Dean kept going and even when Kate Cross fell for the retiring Jhulan Goswami, she kept England’s hopes alive.
But Deepti’s elimination meant India gave Jhulan Goswami a winning farewell match and also a historic series sweep.
