The first Test between India and Sri Lanka, which will be superstar Virat Kohli’s 100th game, starting on Friday, will be played in front of spectators, overturning a previous decision to play the match behind closed doors. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said in a statement on Tuesday that cricket fans will witness the historic moment when Kohli plays his 100th Test match. “The first test between India and Sri Lanka to be played at the Punjab Cricket Stadium in Mohali will not take place behind closed doors,” Shah said in the statement.
“The decision to let spectators into the ground is a decision of the national cricket associations and is based on several factors in the current circumstances. I have spoken with the PCA officials and they have confirmed that cricket fans will witness the historic moment from Virat Kohli playing his 100th test match.” The BCCI secretary said that although the recent white-ball series against the West Indies was played behind closed doors, the dip in COVID-19 cases across the country allowed host associations to allow crowds.
“Based on the advice of the state health authorities, fans were able to attend the matches in Kolkata and Dharamsala, while UPCA Lucknow had T20I with no crowds due to polls a day before the match.
“I am really looking forward to Virat Kohli’s 100th Test and wish our champion cricketer all the best. This is an opportunity for our fans to enjoy. May he continue to represent the country in many more matches.” The PCA also confirmed that spectators would be admitted to the test match.
“The BCCI has told us to proceed with 50 percent audience during the upcoming test match. BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal had called us and informed us that 50 percent public will be allowed and we are now making the necessary arrangements,” PCA treasurer RP Singla told PTI Tuesday.
It was previously decided that Kohli’s landmark test would take place behind closed doors. It sparked widespread criticism with many accusing the BCCI of not doing enough to celebrate Indian cricket’s reigning superstar.

Singla had said last week that no spectators would be allowed in under BCCI’s directive as new COVID-19 cases continued to emerge in and around Mohali.
The PCA had also decided to congratulate Kohli on his historic achievement of playing 100 Tests. Kohli has scored 7,962 runs from 99 tests with an average of 50.39.
