Newly appointed Royal challengers Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar said on Wednesday that he would like to choose Talisman Virat Kohli's brain to learn the nuances of leadership and to be stressed about the importance of “standing with players” in all circumstances. Patidar took over the RCB skipper from FAF du Plessis, which was released prior to last year's Mega Auction. “I am not that much expressive, but I am aware of the situation of the competitions. So I think it is important to support my players and to stand with them in all situations and to give the kind of environment where they Feeling relaxed insured, “said Patidar here in a press conference.
Patidar said that the experienced names in the RCB dressing room can navigate him through the challenging task of IPL Captainincy.
“We have a group of leaders, where their experience and ideas will certainly help in my new leading role, and will also grow as an individual. And it is a great opportunity for me to learn from one of the best cricket (Kohli).
“I think his ideas and experience will certainly help me in my leading role. I have done a lot of (battle) partnerships with him. I know him very well. We are looking forward to the collaboration with the bat, too,” he said.
Patidar also spoke about the chats around RCB captain before a new season and said he was part of it.
But the 31-year-old said that he first wanted to have a taste of Captainincy with his state team Madhya Pradesh before accepting the more strenuous role with the RCB.
Patidar had broken MP in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year and the Vijay Hazare trophy, but after the auction a large part of those tournaments was held.
“Last year I think it was and Mo (Bobat, the director of Cricket at RCB) who spoke about it (CaptainCy). I would like to have the captain of the state team.
“So I got a hint from there that I could get the captain. So when I got the information Virat or I could do the captain, I was very happy with it,” he added.
So, has the RCB Patidar always had in mind as their new captain or did the first right of refusal to Kohli, their former captain? RCB head coach Andy Flower described the pre-ailing scenario.
“I actually thought in our (CaptainCy) discussions with Virat that the integrity and adulthood he showed as a man was of the highest caliber.
“One of the things that stood out was the energy and the enthusiasm that he looks forward to doing this with RCB.
“He clearly loves Rajat, both as a person and as a player. I think that relationship will be very important.
“My experience with him last season and the way he supported FAF when we struggled in the first half of the season, and it only did my respect for him grow. I would say the same about our discussions about the Captain of RCB,” ” said Flower.
So, did RCB consider some other players such as Kl Rahul, Risbh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, who were for grabbing in the auction for their CaptainCy -Rol? “All those guys are clearly fantastic players and excellent leaders. They have captain or his Captain elsewhere. But we wanted to concentrate on collecting the right team, instead of just hunting a person who could play a leading role.
“So for us it was just a case of trust in the internal options we had. If we don't recruit anyone from external, we would be very happy with both Rajat and Virat and options,” Flower said.
The Zimbabwan said that they were quite happy with the way the auction came out for the Royal challengers.
“We were happy with many other goals we had, and the boys we brought in. So it was (buying big names) never really a pressure point for our decision -making,” he added.
