Shubman Gill in ODI series against New Zealand©AFP
It has been a frustrating performance for the Indian New Zealand cricket team, with up to three games rained out since the players arrived. Two of the three T20Is experienced rain interruptions and now the second ODI between the two teams has also been abandoned. However, what the Indian cricket team and its fans have found pleasing is Suryakumar Yadav’s batting, who is in the form of his life, especially in the shortest format. When Shubman Gill was asked about Surya during the press conference, his answer proved how good the latter was in form.
Speaking to the media after the abandoned 2nd ODI, Gill said there is never any need to speak to Surya in the middle as he has been in such good contact.
“Baatcheet koi…wo itni achi batting kar rahe hai, unkey sath batcheet karney ki zaroorat rehti nahi hai waise to, but kaafi maza aata hai unkey sath batting karney mein. (Given the way he plays now, there’s never been a need to have a conversation with him. He hits so well, but yeah, it’s a lot of fun hitting next to him)” said Gill.
The batsman was also asked about his ODI World Cup aspirations in 2023. But he refused to pay much attention to the question, suggesting he is only focused on doing well in the opportunities given to him.
“I’m not looking that far (playing in the 2023 World Cup). Right now my focus is to make the most of the opportunities I get to play for the country and score big. This is what I want to do in this series too,” he said.
Gill would hope to get some playing time in the third ODI between the two sides. The final game of the series will be held at the Hagley Oval on Wednesday.
