A once-in-a-generation fast bowler like Jasprit Bumrah should not play all three formats to avoid injuries and prolong his career, believes World Cup-winning Sri Lankan legend Chaminda Vaas. Vaas emphasized that Indian selectors and team management need to carefully choose the right formats and adapt strategies to keep an eye on Bumrah’s workload management. “Players like Bumrah have a unique action and we need to protect individuals of such caliber. They cannot play in all formats. We need to identify the suitable format and manage their participation accordingly,” Vaas told reporters in Colombo on Friday.
Vaas shared insights into the crucial role of protecting unique talents like Bumrah and nurturing their cricketing journey. Vaas emphasized the importance of managing players like Bumrah, known for their unconventional bowling.
The blistering left-arm pace gives the feeling that both skipper Rohit Sharma and the peerless Virat Kohli will come out with all their might to win the World Cup for India.
“We all know that Virat is a special player and the way he has performed in the last ten years is extraordinary. Even Rohit am quite sure that they will play 100% for India. All the fans are waiting to see these two perform And I am sure they will do everything they can to do well for India,” Vaas said.
Furthermore, Vaas emphasized the crucial role of nurturing emerging Lankan talents like Matheesha Pathirana to elevate them to the status of global stars like Bumrah and Shaheen Shah Afridi.
Vaas emphasized that it is imperative for Sri Lanka Cricket to protect these emerging talents, manage their workload effectively and ensure their gradual development.
“Pathirana is still young. He is still 20 and has a long way to go. But it is up to the Sri Lankan cricket establishment to protect him. If you are going to play 50 overs, we have to make sure he doesn’t play everything .” the competitions and especially Matheesha and taking care of him is very important,” said Vaas.
