Former Australia captain Tim Paine has been left out of Tasmania’s contracted player list, leaving dark clouds over his playing career. Paine, who had stepped down as Australian Test captain following a ‘sexting’ scandal, had taken an indefinite ‘mental health break’ from the game. After taking a break from cricket, Paine had returned to the Tasmanian cricket fold late last season with an unofficial coaching role. The Tasmanian Tigers have picked a largely unchanged squad from last season, narrowly missing the finals in both the Sheffield Shield and Marsh One-Day Cup, finishing third in both competitions.
With Paine out of the squad, the Tigers have stepped up their bowling attack and handed the contract to Australian pacemaker Billy Stanlake, who decided to change his allegiances from Queensland to Tasmania.
Veteran pacer Peter Siddle, who currently plays from Somerset in the County Championship, has also written a one-year contract extension.
While Tasmania missed two finals last season, head coach Jeff Vaughan is convinced not much needs to change.
“There is a good mix of senior and emerging players in the list, and after a promising 2021-22 season, we are excited about what lies ahead,” he told Cricket.com.au.
“With hopefully a full match for both red and white ball cricket this year, I am very excited and confident about what this group can produce,” he added.
