Rohit Sharma replaced Virat Kohli as India’s cue captain after India’s Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) made the announcement in naming the test squad for the South Africa tour. Virat Kohli had already announced that he would step down as captain of the T20I after the T20 World Cup. However, Rohit took the reins not only in the shortest format but also in ODI cricket with Kohli continuing to lead the team in the longest format of the game. The new India captain praised his predecessor, saying Kohli has put the team in a situation from which “there is no looking back”.
Rohit said in a video posted by the BCCI that Kohli always led the team from the front.

“He has put the team in a situation where there is no looking back. In those five years he led the team, he led from the front every time we entered the park. There was clear courage and determination to win every game. That was the message to the whole squad,” said Rohit Sharma.
“We had a great time playing under him. I played a lot of cricket with him, I loved every moment of it and I will continue to do so. We have to get better as a team and as individuals and that will be the be a focus, not just for me, but for the whole squad moving forward,” he added.
Rohit’s first assignment as full-time cue captain is a three-game ODI series in South Africa, which starts on January 19 at Boland Park in Paarl.

Prior to the ODI series, however, the focus will be on the longest format in which Rohit took over from Ajinkya Rahane as Virat Kohli’s deputy.
India will play a three-match test series in South Africa, which begins on December 26 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. The second test will start on January 3 at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, while the third and final match will be played from January 11 in Newlands, Cape Town.
