Ravichandran Ashwin's sudden retirement left the cricket world stunned. The experienced off-spinner decided to end his career midway through the series. As India secured a dramatic draw in the third Test against Australia in Brisbane, Ashwin's decision became the biggest talking point. While Ashwin himself called it an instinctive decision, fans and experts have come up with their theories about the big decision. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra feels seeing Washington Sundar being picked ahead of him in the series opener in Perth helped Ashwin make up his mind on the subject of retirement.
“What exactly happened? There is a moment in everyone's life when you think: Do I still want to do this? Am I okay with that? Ashwin must have had this in his mind for a long time that he doesn't play much.” overseas He is not the number 1 spin option when it comes to overseas games. This had been happening for quite some time. He made peace with it abroad. So he made peace with it,” Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma revealed that he had convinced Ashwin to stay at least until the pink-ball Test, in which the veteran spinner played, but seeing him being dropped again in Brisbane, Ashwin decided to quit.
“But when Sundar played the Perth Test, he said, that's it, I'm done. Ashwin played the Pink-ball Test, but when he was dropped from Gabba, he said, he was done. You're not serious about playing from me.” the XI I did nothing wrong in the Pink-ball Test to be dropped from the Gabba match. At Gabba, Jaddu was making runs, so Ashwin was unlikely to play in Melbourne,” Chopra reasoned.
Ashwin's father also spoke about his son's retirement and said he was humiliated within the team. However, Ashwin brushed aside his father's statement and said he is not “media educated”.
