Former India captain and battle legend Sunil Gavaskar
Former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar is not happy with some senior players resting during the Indian cricket team’s international calendar. Gavaskar in an interview denounced senior cricketers for taking breaks from India matches while playing the entire Indian Premier League season. It is worth noting that India had rested players such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant against England in the first T20I as part of the workload management, before being included in the squad for the next two matches.
While saying that Test matches have a negative impact on a player’s body and mind, Gavaskar emphasized that players should not skip limited overs cricket, especially the T20Is.
“See, I don’t agree with players who rest (during India matches). Not at all. You play for India. You don’t take rest during IPL, but rest when playing for India. I disagree. have to play for India. Don’t talk about half time. There are only 20 overs in a turn in T20. That doesn’t take a toll on your body. In test matches, mind and body take their toll, but in T20 cricket, there isn’t really a problem ( in playing),” Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
India defeated England 2-1 in the three-game T20I series that concluded on Sunday. The sides will now meet for an ODI series of as many matches, starting on July 12. After the ODI series against England is over, India will tour the Caribbean for three ODIs and a five-match T20I series. It starts on July 22 in Port of Spain in Trinidad.
