Years ago, serious cooks in the Hamptons had more limited resources than they do today. Nevertheless, gaps remain and filling them is the mission of a breezy new gourmet boutique, L’Épicuriste in Bridgehampton, NY. A shopping list of Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise, ponzu with yuzu, truffle vegetables and sauces, Moroccan spices, French pâtes de fruit and beautiful gift boxes of canned Portuguese sardines can be easily replenished from the shelves. After living in the area during Covid, Charles de Viel Castel, a French-born financier, jewelry designer and entrepreneur, decided to fill a need he saw for products he couldn’t find locally. His shop also sells baguettes from Armin & Judy, a nearby restaurant, and floral arrangements from local florist Missi Flowers. The store is adjacent to a patch of pastry and sandwich market from Pierre’s, a French restaurant, but Mr De Viel Castel said the two stores appear to complement each other, not compete.
