Spam, the canned pork product created by Hormel Foods 85 years ago, has long been a subject of delight to some and mockery to others. It was a mainstay in the U.S. military and became popular in Asian and Pacific communities, first near U.S. bases, particularly in Hawaii and Korea, before becoming widespread. Now a staged multimedia exploration of the meaning of spam, written by the playwright and artist Jaime Sunwoo for whom Spam draws emotional strings, is being performed in conjunction with her company Free Rein Projects, Ping Chong and Company and the Dixon Place theater on the Lower East. side.
“Specially Processed American Me,” 7:30 p.m., $17 to $28 through Feb. 19, Dixon Place, 161A Chrystie Street (Kenmare Street), 212-219-0736, dixonplace.org.
