National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Thursday said the number of new investor registrations has touched the 1 crore mark on its platform in the last eight months, taking the total to over 8 crore.
These new investor registrations are not limited to top tier cities. Cities outside the top 100 accounted for 45 percent of new investor registrations, NSE said in a statement.
The top cities include Delhi (including NCR) with a share of 7 percent, followed by Mumbai (including Thane/Raigad) with 4.6 percent and Pune with 1.7 percent.
“The eight crore unique PAN investors equate to approximately 5 crore unique households in India, representing approximately 17 percent of households investing directly in the Indian stock market through the NSE’s extensive nationwide network of trading members,” the report said .
The total number of unique customer code accounts registered with the exchange stood at 14.9 crore – customers could register with more than one trading member and included all registrations made so far.
In terms of regions, states from the northern part of India accounted for 43 percent of the last 1 crore new investor registrations, followed by west (27 percent), south (17 percent) and east (13 percent).

The exchange said the growth in participants can be attributed to the momentum witnessed in the capital markets.
According to the NSE, 76 lakh new investor registrations have been registered in the first six months of the current financial year. New investor registrations stood at 1.3 crore in FY23, 1.9 crore in FY22 and 0.90 crore in FY21.
