Diwali Muhurat Trading: Even as Diwali 2023 is just around the corner, investors also have a special occasion on this festival day – muhurat trading. The usual muhurat trading session in the stock market takes place for an hour in the evening on Diwali – this year on November 12 between 6.15pm and 7.15pm, where investors can buy or sell shares in the usual manner. Here’s how the previous 5 muhurat trading sessions performed and what’s expected this year.
Muhurat Trade 2022: During muhurat trading last year, benchmark indices BSE and NSE gave a positive boost to Samvat 2079 by rising 0.88 percent or 524.45 points.
Muhurat Trade 2021: In this muhurat session, the Sensex climbed around 0.5 percent or 295.7 points to end the session at 60,067.62. The Nifty has crossed the 17,900 level.
Muhurat Trade 2020: The stock market rose to the then all-time high of 43,830.93 during the Muhurat trading session, marking the beginning of the Hindu Samvat year 1077. The Sensex eventually settled 194.98 points or 0.45 percent higher at 43,637 .98 during the special session. The Nifty was up 60.30 points or 0.47 percent to end at a lifetime high of 12,780.25.
Muhurat Trade 2019: This muhurat session also marked the beginning of the new Hindu calendar year Samvat 1976 on a positive note. The BSE Sensex rose 192 points or 0.37 percent to end the session at 39,250, while the NSE Nifty rose above the 11,600 level.
Muhurat trading 2018: During this trading session, benchmark indices opened bullish. During the session they lost some ground in terms of profit booking. However, the BSE Sensex managed to settle 245.77 points or 0.70 percent higher at 35,237.98. After crossing the 10,600-point mark in the early session, the Nifty was trading 68.40 points or 0.67 percent higher at 10,598.40.
So over the last five trading sessions, Muhurat Trading ended on a positive note (ranging between 0.37 percent in 2019 and 0.88 percent in 2022). Moreover, in the last fifteen muhurat trading sessions between 2008 and 2022, twelve have closed in the green. Only three of these ended in the red: a decline of 0.3 percent in 2012, a decline of 0.04 percent in 2016 and a decline of 0.6 percent in 2017.
Muhurat Trading 2023: timing and what is expected
This year, leading stock exchanges BSE and NSE will host the one-hour special Muhurat Trading session on November 12 between 6:00 PM and 7:15 PM, including a 15-minute pre-market session.
The customary special session would mark the beginning of Samvat 2080 as per the Hindu calendar year.
The stock market will open for Diwali muhurat trading for an hour on November 12 at 6:15 PM and end after an hour at 7:15 PM. However, the pre-open market session will take place between 6:00 PM and 6:08 PM on the BSE and NSE.
Matching times on the muhurat trading session are from 6:08 PM to 6:15 PM. Trading changes in the call auction end at 7:40 PM. All trades executed in the Indian stock market during the Diwali 2023 muhurat trading session will result in a settlement liability.
On the outlook for Samvat 2080, Sunil Nyati, Managing Director, Swastika Investmart, said: “With the Indian elections looming and a spike in the US interest rate environment looming, the outlook for Indian equity markets is positive. Both gold and equities are expected to perform well in the coming months, with gold potentially benefiting further from the expected economic slowdown in the US in 2024.”
He said his investment preference leans heavily towards Indian equities as the preferred asset class. “Indian stock markets are poised to surpass not just gold but other global markets as well.”
