TCS, the country’s largest exporter of IT services, said Monday that undeclared work is an “ethical issue” and against its core values, but has not taken any action against staff.
The company, which employs more than 6.16 lakh people, will consider all relevant dimensions as it forms its final opinion on the issue that has dominated headlines in recent weeks, Chief Human Resources Officer Milind Lakkad told reporters.
“We believe moonlighting is an ethical issue and is against our core values and culture,” said Lakkad.
The chief executive officer and managing director of the company, Rajesh Gopinathan, said an employee is not allowed to work for another organization as part of the service contract.
Lakkad said that unlike colleagues like Wipro, who recently announced the layoff of more than 300 employees, TCS has not taken any action against an employee.
He said that TCS has a long-term commitment to its employees and that the employees also have a “mutual commitment” to the company, and he also acknowledged that his colleagues in the IT industry currently have different views on this topic.
He went on to say that the company has recently communicated its stance on moonlight, but did not elaborate.
In recent weeks, CXOs in the IT industry have provided varied views on the subject of moonlight. The IT industry has faced a staff shortage in recent months due to high demand for services due to the increased adoption of digitalization after the pandemic.
While some, such as Tech Mahindra, have supported the idea of ancillary activities, others, such as IBM, have expressed concern about Wipro.
