After canceling the admission of scholar and activist Safoora Zargar, Jamia Millia Islamia has now banned her from campus. The 29-year-old was arrested in the case of the 2020 CAA riots. Zargar was charged with the Delhi riots and booked under the Illegal Activities (Prevention) Act. Jamia’s sociology department had previously withdrawn her admission, alleging “unsatisfactory” progress had been made with her thesis work.
“It has been observed that Ms. Safoora Zargar (ex-student) has been involved in organizing agitations, protests and marches on campus against the irrelevant and reprehensible issues of disturbing the peaceful academic environment with few students who are mostly outsiders. She turns on innocent university students and, along with some other students, tries to use the university platform for her rogue political agenda. It also hinders the normal functioning of the institution. In view of the above, in order to maintain a peaceful academic environment on campus, the appropriate authority has approved the campus ban on ex-student Ms. Safoora Zargar with immediate effect,” the varsity’s injunction reads, a leading news report reported.
Zargar had enrolled in the integrated MPhil and PhD program of Jamia’s Sociology Department as of 2019. After Jamia withdrew her admission, she claimed that the college prevented her from submitting her thesis. According to the university board, this was because she had not yet completed her dissertation when her third extension expired on February 6.
She also claimed that she was forced to apply for an extension in the female scientists category, but was rejected after several months on the grounds of “inadequate progress”. The scholar also claimed that her emails to the Registrar and VC have received no response. “This is clearly against the principles of the UGC and exposes the ulterior motives of the supervisor and the department,” she said.
The university also claimed that it had previously asked the student to apply for an extension, for which she had applied too late. The university stated: “In the third semester, Safoora Zargar was suggested to take the maternity leave, but she chose not to. Later, given her circumstances, she was verbally advised by the HoD to take childcare leave, but she declined and assured the RAC that she would complete her work on time. During and even after the expiration of her COVID renewal (sixth semester), she was advised to apply for renewal as a female scholar so that she can complete and submit her work. But she has not followed the advice of the promoter and the RAC and has not submitted her extension request as a female scientist within the maximum time limit set.”
