Army Eastern Command Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General KK Repswal, said on Wednesday that the recruitment of young soldiers under the Agnipath scheme will ensure the availability of a trained pool in case of any requirement, even after the end of their four-year term in the armed forces.
“A trained pool is available to you and if the situation calls for it they can be recalled,” he said at a news conference at Eastern Command headquarters here in Fort William. Repswal said the military will recruit 40,000 soldiers under this plan and the process would begin within three months. He said only male candidates will be recruited at this time. “Girls also get a chance when the system stabilizes.
Repswal claimed Agnipath’s plan is to transform the military to prepare it for the future, saying it foresees the retention of 25 percent of each batch for the regular armed forces, and the 75 percent that will leave on completion of four years is preferred when recruiting to the Central Armed Police and Assam Rifles.
The government on Tuesday unveiled a plan that will overhaul the decades-old selection process to bring in fitter and younger troops to tackle the future security challenges the country faces. This year, approximately 46,000 soldiers between the ages of 17 and a half and 21 will be recruited into the Army, Navy and Air Force.
