Ahmedabad University announces the launch of a new International Center for Space and Cosmology. The center will stimulate groundbreaking research in space, astrophysics and cosmology, educate the next generation of researchers and increase public understanding of this very exciting field of physics. The center aims to reach out to young students to encourage them to consider a research career in space and cosmology and to provide them with information about opportunities in these fields.
The center will work closely with other research clusters at Ahmedabad University. The International Center for Space and Cosmology also plans workshops and conferences, with the aim of receiving short- and long-term visitors, connecting with students around the world interested in astrophysics, space exploration and cosmology, and creating academic programs .
Anchored to the School of Arts and Sciences at Ahmedabad University, the center will collaborate with national and international colleagues with related interests. Its director, Professor Pankaj Joshi, is a scientist known for his fundamental contributions in the physics and cosmology of black holes. One of his main research topics is the possibility of massive stars collapsing gravitationally into naked singularities instead of black holes.
The center’s other founding faculty members are Professor Gaurav Goswami and Professor Raghavan Rangarajan, who both work in cosmology and high-energy physics, particularly in the context of early universe physics and correlations with observations of the current universe.
The launch of the new center coincides with recent observations by the Event Horizon Telescope (May 2022) of the very compact and dense object at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. An image of the ultra-compact object at the center of our galaxy has been created using a series of network radio telescopes around the world. The JMN (Joshi-Malafarina-Narayan) naked singularity model, proposed and published in 2011 by Professor Pankaj Joshi and colleagues, contributed to the modeling underlying this discovery.
