After students started protesting at Allahabad University demanding that final exams be taken online, the varsity authorities decided to promote all sophomores to the third year. A number of students have been demanding cancellation of the offline exams since last month. Meanwhile, the exams of the students taking the final year of the undergraduate courses will be conducted in online mode, a leading news agency reported.
There were previously massive protests after the university administration said it will conduct final exams in offline mode. A large number of students protested for hours at the vice-chancellor’s office to demand that the exams be administered online.
“In view of the protest against the decision of the high power committee, some students protested today and sprinkled kerosene on themselves. In view of this unfortunate situation, in an urgent meeting of the University Board chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sangita Srivastava, it was decided, at the request of the District Board, to reconsider that all students of the second year of graduation obtained their doctorate and the examination of the students of the third years will be taken online, details of which will be given later,” AU public relations officer Prof. Jaya Kapoor told the news agency.
Earlier, Allahabad University authorities have decided that the final exams of both RUG and PG candidates will be held in offline mode. The arts faculty had subsequently witnessed a major protest from some of the students demanding that the exams be taken online as classes were also held in virtual mode during the academic session. The protest had lasted about 20 days.
Previously, the varsity had formed a powerful committee to decide whether the exams would be held in online or offline mode. Then it suggested to ask for feedback on the offline exams from the students. The last date to share the suggestions was March 10. After receiving the feedback from the students, the committee made its recommendations to Vice-Chancellor Prof Sangita Srivastava. It was then decided that the exams would be conducted in offline mode. After the decision was made public, a large number of students began to protest in the art faculty. The police were called in and the fire brigade was also called.
