After the hijab spat, the education sector in Karnataka is all set for another crisis with the state Wakf Board demanding that the education department allow them to celebrate Eid Milad at schools such as the Ganesh festival.
Education Minister BC Nagesh said on Thursday that no religious function is allowed in schools. No such permission has been given to date and the request of the Wakf board will not be considered.
Nagesh said the Ganesh festival celebration has not been introduced by the BJP government. The idols of Lord Ganesh have been kept in schools since the pre-independence period.
The Wakf board chaired by Shafi Saadi had demanded that the education department reserve a separate room in schools to perform namaz.
Shafi Saadi demanded that, “there must be an occasion for the celebration of festivals of our religion. Children belonging to all religions should have equal rights.”
“During the hijab crisis, we had also made it clear that misunderstandings need to be cleared up by raising awareness about religious matters. As the Ganesh festival is celebrated, a space should be kept for the practice of Islam,” he insisted.
