The government-run Ambedkar University in Delhi announced on Thursday that it will hold all admissions into its undergraduate programs through the newly introduced Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
It is mandatory for all candidates to appear in CUET, 2022, including those seeking admission to redundant seats. Eligibility criteria are determined based on grades achieved in CUET, Vice Chancellor Anu Singh Lather said at a press conference here. Prof Kartik Dave, Dean Planning, Ambedkar University (AU), informed that the candidates can only appear in CUET in those subjects which they have studied in class 12. Merit is calculated based on a combination of only those subjects in which the candidate appeared in the CUET, he said.
There will be no harm to anyone in changing the stream, Dave clarified. Suresh Babu, dean of student services, said the CUET will provide a level playing field for the students. As a state university, we were not obliged to go for CUET. However, in the greater interest of society, we have decided to go for the test because sooner or later all universities will be asked to participate, Babu told PTI.
Babu gave details on the admission process and said students must appear in the CUET and then they must apply to AU. “Based on CUET scores, a merit list will be prepared and admission will be held accordingly,” said Babu. The 85 percent seats at the university are reserved for residents of Delhi. The vice chancellor said admission to CUET will help expand the university’s reach. “We will have more students from distant regions. Admission through CUET will give the university more visibility,” Lather said.
When asked whether the university plans to increase the number of seats across the degree programmes, she says that space scarcity is the university’s biggest problem. She also announced that two new campuses are being planned in the national capital. Nitin Malik, registrar, said that in order to facilitate the students in the CUET process, the university will set up a help desk and have a chat box on its website. He also said that the varsity will host a series of open houses to facilitate the students’ admission process. Vice Chancellor Lather also announced the new programs to be launched in the 2022-23 academic session, namely Master of Arts in Criminology and Philosophy and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She said the university is in the process of setting up a School of Rural and Tribal Studies.
Last month, the Chair of the University Grants Commission, M Jagadesh Kumar, announced that all central universities will be required to use the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores to admit students into undergraduate from the 2022-23 session. programs. The CUET will consist of three parts: compulsory language, 27 subject areas and a general test on quantitative reasoning, logical and analytical reasoning, numerical proficiency, and general knowledge and current affairs. All questions about sections will consider the level of class 12 as the benchmark. The exam is administered in a computer-based test mode.
