Anant National University (AnantU), Ahmedabad, has announced the launch of a four-year undergraduate program focused on climate action. The Bachelor of Technology degree, specializing in climate technologies, is India’s first such degree, the university claims.
Under this degree, aspiring engineers will learn to use engineering tools and design thinking to create technology-driven solutions to climate change, it added. As part of this curriculum, semesters one to six offer a step-by-step study on 8 climate technology streams: climate simulation, engineering mathematics, environmental engineering, climate chemistry, energy and technology, design thinking and behavioral sciences, technology and society, as well as applied research projects in the climate lab. The last two semesters will focus on complete immersion in the industry.
For the practical work for students, a climate lab at AnantU’s Ahmedabad campus will be equipped with the latest software for performing climate simulations and various instruments and technical devices for weather measurements, solar radiation, studying and simulating PV systems, testing and setting up renewable energy sources, and more, the institute added.
Commenting on the program’s launch, Dr. Anunaya Chaubey, Provost of Anant National University: “The reasons and implications of climate change in India and certain other emerging countries are different from those in the rest of the world. There is thus a need for a specialized climate study program that offers a regional context. It is important to train students to find and implement solutions, and to develop technology to adapt to and mitigate climate change for both India and other parts of the world.”
“Measuring, forecasting, mitigating and adapting to climate change requires an influx of new technologies and millions of people skilled in using existing and new technologies. We are pleased to be able to establish India’s first undergraduate degree related to climate as it will effectively bring our country and the world closer to the goal of zero emissions. I invite students to become engineers who solve climate change, and ask parents to support the students in their unique choice for this vocational and specialized engineering degree offered by AnantU.” said Dr. Miniya Chatterji, Founding Director, Anant School for Climate Action, and CEO, Sustain Labs Paris.
