Jeremiah Thoronk, Climate Action fellow at Anant National University, has been awarded the 2021 Global Student Prize for inventing a device that uses kinetic energy from traffic and pedestrians to generate clean power. He received $100,000 from Chegg.org at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters.
A Sierra Leonean student, Jeremiah, received the award in recognition of making a real impact on learning through clean energy invention, the university said. “He is an advocate of renewable energy solutions and has been actively researching, developing and designing several innovations such as solar systems and cold chain logistics elements for efficient cooling systems,” it added.

He is the author of numerous energy-related articles and has received numerous international awards, including the Commonwealth Youth Award for Excellence in Development 2021 – Africa, the United Nations (UN) Academic Impact Millennium Fellow, the United Nations and the Millennium Campus Network.
Anant Fellowship for Climate Action is a one-year global program focused on climate change solutions, offering an eclectic mix of climate solutions for geographic locations, occupations, and age groups. The current cohort consists of 24 fellows from 13 countries in various domains, including microbiology research, biodiversity conservation, AI and data science, environmental activism, sustainable business, agriculture, marine ecosystems and much more.

“It is committed to strengthening the global climate action community by bringing together climate experts such as faculty, mentors, alumni and partners on a common platform to engage in meaningful dialogue, learning and collaboration. The fellowship is looking to expand its network of climate change solutions and invites applications to join its unique program to build sustainable solutions,” the university said.
